At the heart of Trentino, Trento is a city surrounded by vineyards, valleys, and mountains, where Italian and Alpine cultures meet naturally. Roman streets and Renaissance façades introduce a territory shaped by altitude, agriculture, and a strong sense of local identity.

Just north of the city, near Mezzocorona, San Michele all’Adige is home to one of Italy’s most historic centres for agricultural and oenological education. Founded in 1874 and now part of the Edmund Mach Foundation, the institute has combined teaching, scientific research, experimentation, and technical support for generations. Its influence can be felt throughout Trentino, in the knowledge and precision that local growers and winemakers bring to their work.

Wine changes character from one valley to another. In the Piana Rotaliana, Teroldego Rotaliano is the great native red, deeply connected to its land and family vineyards. On the higher slopes, Trentodoc expresses the freshness of mountain viticulture through the Classic Method, with a second fermentation in the bottle and long ageing on the lees. Chardonnay and Pinot Nero are its principal grapes, shaped by altitude and significant temperature variations.

Other valleys reveal different identities: Nosiola and the rare Vino Santo in the Valle dei Laghi, Müller-Thurgau on the steep terraces of the Val di Cembra, and Marzemino farther south. Trentino’s food tradition follows the same geography, from mountain cheeses, canederli, strangolapreti, cured meats, apples, trout, and polenta to carne salada and delicate extra virgin olive oil from Garda Trentino.

At the northern tip of Lake Garda, the landscape changes once again. Around Riva del Garda and Torbole, olive and lemon trees grow beneath dramatic mountain walls, while the Ora wind connects the lake with the surrounding valleys. Here, the Mediterranean and Alpine worlds meet in one of Italy’s most surprising landscapes.

Trento and its valleys are not defined by a single wine or tradition. They are a mosaic of mountains, vineyards, lakes, family producers, and flavours, held together by knowledge, patience, and respect for the land.
